Donald's Story

January 13, 2008 I began a new appreciation for academics and my personal worth shortly after my introduction to Central Regional High School in 1956. Enjoying, but squeeking through grade school and my lst year of High School at Point Pleasant Beach High, I self-destructed during my sophmore year; I passed PE and typing . . . nothing more. At the end of this sophmore year I had the opportunity to either remain at PBHS or transfer to the newly completed CRHS in Bayville. Fortunately, I made the the right decision and chose to transfer to Central. I began anew in September of '56 again in a sophmore homeroom, and 4 majors in the hole to make up if I wanted to graduate with my class in the customary four-year timeframe. The new CRHS under the leadership of Mr. Arnold Profeta, Principal, immediately presented itself as a controlled, academically-oriented environment to learn in and fostered in me a new desire to learn and achieve. I did, and along with some evening tutoring and the maxing out of my schedule with major classes, managed to graduate with the rest of my classmates in 1958. From that time forward I have not looked back, not so much because of me, but because of the opportunity I had and been fortunate enough to be able, to attend Central Regional High School at a pivotal time in my life. I have faced the next 53 years proud and confident of my abilities. I thank CRHS for providing that opportunity. After graduation, I remained in the shore area working fulltime and playing gigs with a band put together during the high school years. In late 1961, I received my draft notice, went to see my Air Force recruiter and signed up for a new career. I left home in February of 1962 and remained in service until I retired in October of 1985. I had wonderful assignments and lived in many interesting places during my career, places like Greenland, California, Nebraska, Hawaii, Nebraska, Iran, Louisiana and finally Nebraska one last time. My wife (Colorado native) and I (Jersey guy) decided the logical thing to do would be to retire in Tennessee. Still with four of our five children living at home it also turned out to be a good choice. I really didn't retire, but did a "little" real estate selling for about a year then went back to work doing what I had learned to do in the Air Force and became a Kelly Girl and a Uniforce Guy and landed a fulltime job as an Administrative Assistant. I will start my 18th retirement year working for a company th...Expand for more
at does Development, Design, Construction, Engineering & Property Management. I still enjoy working and plan to continue as long as I can contribute. We have three children that live in Tennessee, our oldest son lives in California, and our only daughter makes her home in Idaho. My wife, Caroline, has introduced me to the beauty and wonders of Colorado which we visit on a fairly regular basis, as well as Idaho where we get an opportunity to do what grandparents enjoy doing, spoiling grandchildren. Fun stuff. Since leaving service I have also had the chance to get back into music somewhat working with groups, duet and solo work. I now have the age, but still no call from the Grand Olde Opry, but I stay close to the phone just in case. I have really enjoyed getting reaquainted and "plinkin' & grinning" again, Tennessee style. My youngest sister, Susan, still lives in Barnegat, NJ, so there is still some roots there. I returned to NJ in October of '08 to celebrate the 50th reunion of the CRHS Class of '58. It was the first time in 50 years since graduation that I had the opportunity to see many of the "kids" I went to school with and enjoyed so long ago. A weekend event that took place during a beautiful and rare, weather-wise, weekend for NJ in October. Carol Walker-Clayton, who I started Kindergarten with at Osbornville Elementry School in 1945 and her husband, Tim, sponsored a spectacular luncheon in their backyard in Point Pleasant on Saturday. After lunch many went on a planned tour to visit the now very large campus at our "old" school.in Bayville. For the wrap-up of this fabulous weekend Reunion, we all met again the Sunday evening for dinner and dance at Citta's Olde Time Tavern in Toms River. Ironically, what would be the finale for our Reunion weekend would also be the last night in business for Citta's Olde Time Tavern; it turned out that we would be their closing act. Many members of the CRHS Class of '58 also spent their Freshman and Sophmore years of high school at PPBHS and have many classmate-friends that we left behind when transferring to CRHS. We get together jointly with those classmates at various activities on a fairly regular basis to stay in touch and continue to enjoy one another's company and friendship. As living in TN and still working prohibits my attending all get togethers, I still try to attend as often as possible. These are enduring friends and very special people.
